Built in 70 BC, the oldest known. Since June 14, viewing from the southern entrance only.

Which ticket do I need?

€20 is the city only. €25 adds the Villa of the Mysteries, the Villa of Diomedes and Boscoreale. €30 Pompeii Plus adds Oplontis and Stabiae over three days. All of them carry your name and count against 20,000 a day.

Pompeii or Herculaneum?

Pompeii if it's your one day near Naples. Herculaneum if you have two hours, or have seen Pompeii: €16, the same train line, four hectares with the upper floors still standing.

How long do I need?

The park says 2 to 3 hours minimum. Two for the Forum and the houses around it; four for both ends; a day with the villa.

Can I visit without a guide?

Yes. The park's free map has three paths; audio guides rent at the gates from €9; the park's own 1.5-hour tours cost €8 plus the ticket.

Vesuvius the same day?

Yes, if your crater slot and transport leave time for both. The crater ticket is €10, online only; last admission 15:00 to 18:00 by month.

Where are the bodies?

Thirteen casts in the Garden of the Fugitives and twenty-two in the Large Palaestra exhibition. Both on your ticket; nearest gate Piazza Anfiteatro.

Add Herculaneum or Vesuvius?

Both are on the same train line as Pompeii. Herculaneum is the smaller, better-kept town; Vesuvius is the walk to the crater, with its own ticket and its own clock.

Herculaneum

Much smaller than Pompeii, with upper floors, wooden doors and painted rooms still in place. Two hours is a full visit. Ercolano Scavi station, on the same line from Naples.

Vesuvius crater

A guided walk along the rim, 4,010 m and about 2.5 hours, in groups of 20. Buses go up from the Pompei Villa dei Misteri station; the path closes on an orange weather alert.

Getting there, from wherever you start

Two Circumvesuviana lines stop at Pompeii, and each stop has its own gate. Pick your city. Train times are on EAV's own timetable; fares and minutes are not on the park's page, so we don't quote them.
